The run of a century

Its exactly an year since I rediscovered running. For those who know me closely, they know that I have completed my first marathon in 2001 (at an age of 26) and my second one in 2002. For the next 10 years, I had just been living in the glory of those two marathons. While I havent kept away, my running had been inconsistent never extending beyond a few months at once. Mostly it was laziness, that kept me away. There can be other reasons, but those are just excuses.

Last year, I discovered that my health was failing in the middle of a demanding project, when I fell sick three times in a span of three months. It was an obvious decision to get back into running. A few close friends starting a running venture, provided another trigger and also the ideal platform.

Motivation...

The next few months saw me from crawling to the finish at Auroville (with an injury) to flying in TCS Bangalore 10K.  With the beginning of the year proving to be so good, I wanted to super-size
and participate at every event that happened. I was soon brought to earth by Ashok Nath, who I regard as one of my mentors. Ultra was toned down from 100K to 75K. (The 24H category didn't exist then).

And very soon, I crewed for Mark Woolley at La Ultra. There was some impending curiosity about other bigger and badder Ultra-marathon races like Badwater and Spartathlon. The target for Ultra was again upgraded to 100K as a entry requirement for Spartathlon. The only catch was it required me to complete the distance in under 10:30, which wasnt possible with my current pace.

The Preparation...

I have been running for 13 years (what if it isnt continuous). More importantly, I crewed for a 45-hour finisher at La Ultra. This got me loads of insight into Ultra running, even if I hadnt personally experienced it in my body. The previous longest that I had run was a 50K (upgraded from a 37.5K) at Bangalore Ultra 2009, with a finish time of over 6:30 hours.

As part of the Mumbai marathon training along with the Pacemakers group, I do three running workouts in a week, and am in reasonable shape. However, that wouldn't meet the requirements of running a 100K. As part of the Ultra training, I did a marathon distance (42K) and a 50K. By the time, I finished the 50K, I figured that the recovery will be tough for runs longer than 5 hours. The logistics also proved complicated for managing longer distance runs.

The plan to run longer distances was soon shelved, and I adopted a backup strategy to do a back-to-back long runs (two long runs on consecutive days), but never could execute it, except for one-time, when a long run was coupled with speed-work on the previous day.

The change of date in Mysore Celebration Run Half-marathon also robbed me of one precious weekend which could have been utilized for a practice long run. I effectively went to the start-line having run one 50K four weeks prior to the race.

Pre-Race

The week preceding the race was quiet, thanks to an upset stomach, and a business trip.

Knowing that carb-loading is very important for the distance, I researched on the web, and found about Western Australian Method. Just a three minute workout on the preceding day set me up for the race next day. I was already feeling the carbs on my thighs the previous day.

My close friend and classmate Manivannan joining in for the 50K, we went to pickup the race packet just in the nick of time. I also picked up a few GU gel packs. I also dropped off two bags for the organizers (1st one to be kept at 0K and the next one at 6.25K). The second bag was crucial  as I would cross that point every 12.5K, it was bigger and had a majority of the stuff.

Another friend, Dipankar (2-time Ironman finisher), offered me his Garmin 310 XT (20H runtime) for the race, which meant that I can forget about the tracking for the race. Dipankar also offered a few tips that would help me during the course of the race.

We arrived back home at 2230 and went to bed at 2300. After having finished our dinners earlier at 1900 hours, we did the last minute formalities, like getting the race clothes ready, pinning bibs to the shorts/t-shirts etc.

I promptly got up at 0230, as the alarm rang. I would have preferred a better night of sleep, but given the excitement preceding the race, I had the best I could get. We had pasta for pre-race meal, thanks to my wife, who painfully prepared it late the previous night sacrificing a few hours of her sleep. Our start had to be delayed from the planned 0330, as I had some stomach problems. We finally started at 0355 after realizing that we are getting late for the 0500 start.

We arrived at the race venue, just 10 minutes before the start, with me doing my warmup exercises from the car to the venue, on the run. Luckily, Mani could take care of my bags to be dropped off at the start.

The Race

The 5am start meant that we had to start in the dark. I greeted all the fellow runners, whoever I could find. In all the excitement, I forgot to press the Start button in the Garmin. I also realized late that my HR monitor wasnt pairing with it. 

The course was 12.5K out and back, which had to be covered four times for a 100K distance.

The first hour was exciting as we ran as a pack in the dark. There was Gajendra, Chandra, Amar, Srinivas and a couple of others. A couple of us had torches, and the rest helped shouting the directions, LEFT, RIGHT, KEEP RIGHT, KEEP LEFT, etc.

The aid stations were just getting set up as we carried along. At one point, we had to skip the aid-station as they were just laying the table, and at another, I had to wait for two minutes before I could get my hands on a cup of water.

Once the daylight came on, I kept cheering anyone and everyone I could find on the course. At the 10th kilometer, I would have my biggest surprise. Nanjunda who was running the 100K passed me in the opposite direction. A quick calculation, and he was running at close to 15kph, I was wondering. This would further be confirmed at my 20K mark, where he would be crossing his 30K.

At the 25K mark, I would take a short break of 2 minutes, sitting on the chair. I also got my bag out, and used a cap. The decision to change the t-shirt was deferred to 31.25K as I didnt have the one I wanted in this bag. When I arrived at the 31.25K mark, I was surprised to find my bag missing. As part of my plan, I was running with a dark-blue t-shirt during the dark hours, and a bright t-shirt for the sunny hours (to reflect the heat). With the bag missing, I ended up running with the dark T-shirt. As the loop continued, I began feeling the heat, and my pace dropped considerably.

When I reached the 50K mart (at the 0-point), I got my misplaced bag out, and changed on to the T-shirt. Despite telling the volunteers multiple times, I wasn't convinced that the bag would reach the destination. I sought help from Juggy, and entrusted him to get the bag to 6.25K point. With all this confusion going on, I forgot about me gels as I had gone on for another 200 metres. I went back to the start point, took two packs of gel.

When I reached the 56K mark, I was relieved to see my bag. I took one ibuprofen tablet preemptively, and also changed to a hat which would give me more protection from the sun. Before crossing the 62.5K mark, I overtook Srinivas, who had slowed down very much and was in pain. Later during the loop, I would pass Jagan, who was also leading earlier. During the course of the loop, I also passed on a message to Sachin Pandey, that I'll need a couple of gel packs for the next loop.

At the 75K mark, I took a short break, and also left messages for my family about my finishing time. I also collected the two gel packs, which would be used later on in the course. During this loop, I saw Atmanand, a Chennai runner, who had earlier passed me, and spent 3-4 kms chasing him down. Finally, when I passed him and went to the 6.25K mark, there was a surprise waiting. The course had been curtailed to 12.5K and we have to do it twice to finish the distance. My instant reaction was a disappointment that I had to run the loop again. 

I would see Atma, another hundred metres ahead, and gave him the spare gel pack I had. On my way to the 88K mark, I will pass Kieren DSouza, who is a kid by our standards, yet running strong. I ran along with him for the next few kilometres chatting with him. On reaching the 88K mark, I realized that most competition had dropped off, and only Opendro (who held almost a 8K lead aginst me), at one point, was ahead by a kilometre. I would eventually cross him.

The loop was further curtailed to a 2K with the sun falling down, and we had to do it six times (the rest 500m being covered in the previous loop).

The finish

This left myself and Kieren in competition for the 3rd place. With my back to the wall for a podium finish, I had to turn the heat on Kieren. I picked up pace, and threw him a big challenge. As luck would have it, I caught cramps within another two kilometers. When I reached the 0-K point, took some water and salt to ease out the cramps, and kept walking. 

By this time, Kieren had picked up a 300 metre lead, and was running along with another "Uday Kumar" who was doing the 24H challenge. I took me a while to catch up with him, but I eventually did. During this time, I kept looking at the Irsid, the guy in running for the 2nd place, who lead was rapidly reducing. Though he was running weak, he had a bigger lead to carry him through to the 2nd place.

It all seemed magical when I crossed the finish line. I went on to congratulate Kieren who would finish a few minutes behind me, and then Atma and Opendro.

For me, it was extremely satisfactory to have crossed the finish line strong.

Celebrating the Dusshera with a Half Marathon

I wasnt still sure when I got to the start line. There was a nagging pain on the left ankle, which even the ten minute jog to the starting point didnt help. As the rest of the pacemakers arrived, I just got on with the proceedings and forgot about the ankle. Pani Sir drilled us through the customary pre-race warm-up which got us ready for the race. As I got onto the start line, my first priority was to get as close to the front as possible.

The plan for the race was not to push. Given to understand that Brijesh, is not going to push either,  I asked him to stay with me. As the countdown ended, I raced off the start line, only to see the rest of the team lag behind by another twenty metres. So much for the adrenaline rush, I tried to slow down, looking back every once in a while, for the rest to catch up.

As I crossed the Metropole Hotel, in which I had stayed the previous night, the lace on my left shoe had come off. I knelt down to tie the laces, and saw a small group zoom by. Realizing that it is none other than pacemakers, I pulled myself together and joined them. So there we were, Brijesh, Neera, myself, Bharath leading the pack, with Coach Pani sir, following us a few seconds behind. 

As we reached the first water point, Brijesh mentioned that he's going to stop for water. I took my usual walk break with the water, only to see Brijesh zoom ahead. I quickly gulped whatever I could  and joined him back. To say that Brijesh runs like a Kenyan would be an understatement. If you want to understand how Brijesh runs, just watch an ostrich. The arm swing exactly looking like the wings of an ostrich, and with each step pushing off and landing softly. Its a treat you must watch it for yourself.

The next mile saw us run through an uphill and a downhill, on which Pankaj Rai and his mate, overtook us. When we entered the Mysore University Campus, I stopped once more for water, to see Brijesh race ahead. At this moment, I gave up the catching up game, and followed him closely. 

As we crossed the 8K mark, there was a water stop, which I skipped having just had water. I would realize later on that this would be my biggest mistake for the race. The next five kilometers saw run along the Kukkarakere lake, on a trail shared by early morning walkers. We also saw the 10K runners cross us from the opposite side. More importantly we saw the HM lead pack crossing us in the opposite direction, giving us a clear indication of how ahead the lead pack were. All through this distance, I was keeping slightly ahead of Pani Sir, Neera and Bharath setting the pace for them.

There wasn't a single water point all through this distance, and that scuttled my plans of a gel pack at half way. When I arrived at the next water point around 13K (which was the same as the one I had missed earlier), my gel pack wasn't read. So much that I decided to move on with just a pinch of salt.

Thankfully, the next water point arrived within a kilometer, and I had half a gel pack, or whatever I could have before I reached the water point. With Brijesh racing ahead and nowhere in sight, the next target to catch Pankaj, who was about 60 metres ahead of me. I tried closing the distance by changing gears a little, only to realize that I was getting tired, and would hold back.

At first, it was Chandra, (the 3:40 Hyderabad finisher), who offered me to join along. I politely declined, knowing my limits well. And next, it was Pani Sir, to whom, I told, I'll save my energy for the last 2 kms, or so, it should be. 

With my Garmin beeping for the 11th mile, I switched it to time mode (in which I had the time display, and all this time, I had been running on the pace alone). It read 1:24:40. Just then, I realized that I could break 1:40 if I cover the next 2.1 miles in 15 minutes. I kept running calculations in the back of my mind maintaining the same pace I had. At some point, when it required me to do a 6:40 mile, I gave up. 

With the 1:40 timing so close, I didnt bother to stop at the next water point and had water on the go. I kept my gaze locked in at Pani Sir, and held myself together. As we reached the finish line, I sprinted up to catch Pankaj, and we finished together.  A few seconds later, I stopped my Garmin (after realizing that I hadn't done it yet), and saw the timing. It was 1:40:28.
Update: The official timing of the race is Gun Time: 1:40:21 and Chip Time: 1:40:18. Now, I am wondering if I could have shaved off those 18 seconds.

Before the race, the idea was not to push, and I wasnt sure how my feet would respond. But once the race started, the adrenaline carried me for atleast 16 kms, and the last five was tough, if not a struggle. Had I realized a mile earlier that I was so close, I could have given it a shot. But, let me save the 1:40 for another day, and be contended with the PR.

Many thanks to coach Pani sir, who kept saying, go ahead, you are doing great from behind, and the fellow pacemakers, including Brijesh, (who stole the day with a super 1:36:30), Neera Katwal (who took home the womens winner prize), and Bharath (who keeps amazing everyone with the finish line sprint). And finally, thanks to that wonderful spirit in Pani Sir, that he keeps racing with the rest of us, and inspires us, even at his age. I came to know about his duel with Pankaj later on.

Things that worked well:
1. Salt, continues to work well. No cramps at all, though it felt edgy at the finis.
2. Running with the group, meant I had to push harder (no stops at waterpoints)
3. Weather (thankfully).

Things that didn't work well:
1. Could have seen the route beforehand, which would have equipped me for the Gel intake
2. Not tracking target time or pace (It was meant not to be).

"Running" on top of the world

Only 30% oxygen, 17580 feet and a run from the world's second highest motorable pass, Tang Lang La. With the sky filled with an ocean of clouds, and the sun beating down, it was a pleasant cold day at the top. Snow caps to your left, and the Tanglang peak to the right, and view covering more than a hundred miles towards Morey Plains behind you, words aren't enough to describe the experience at Tang Lang La.

Most of the runners and crew have arrived a week earlier, which meant they were better acclimatized to the altitude.


As for me, having arrived only two days earlier, the acclimatization was just sufficient. Mark Woolley wanted to go Tang Lang La, for a recce of the route, as well as, to get some running exposure at that altitude. SeowKong Kim, the ultra-runner from Malaysia, also joined in. We were a total of six people, including two crew members for each runner.

Before we started at eight am in the morning, I got a decent walk up to Shanti Stupa, where we had the marathon the previous day. Tang Lang La, was about a 100 kilometres from Leh, and the roads were mostly  good.

We started as planned, and had a small tea stop at Upshi. We passed through a few villages, Taru, Gya, Sasoma, Rumptse, before hitting the uphill to Tang Lang La.

We walked the last one kilometre of uphill leading to Tang Lang La. Mark was gracious enough to wait for me, while I changed over to some warm gear. We spent a few minutes on top of the pass, evaluating the course, and also taking pictures of the marvellous scenery around.

I skipped the morning run in anticipation of this run, and was hoping that I would be able to run along with Mark and Seowkong. Being downhill, I had a 10kph pace in mind, which is reasonable at lower altitudes.

When we started, Mark and Seowkong were a few paces ahead, and I was following them. After a few minutes, I had some breathlessness, and the altitude began to take its toll. I continued slowly putting each step forward.  The road was of dirt, because of which, I wasn't getting enough bounce from the shoes, which made each step harder.

I stopped a couple of times, to get water, and after a while, I could hear my heart pounding like a metronome. I haven't felt such pounding even at peak interval training for 100 or 200m intervals. I started walking downhill. Meanwhile, Mark and Seowkong had extended their lead quite a bit. The only regret that I had was that I couldn't run along with them.

At around six km, Mark, the crew car caught up with me, and asked me to join back in. With the tarmac, only a few metres ahead, and knowing that I would be able to get a better pace on the tarmac, I insisted that I run for another km or so. I asked the crew car to wait for ten minutes and then start.

The run on the tarmac was quite good. I was still facing breathlessness, but yet, was enjoying the run. When the crew car caught up with me, I joined back in, and we found Seowkong running another 2km ahead, and Mark, one more km ahead of Seowkong. Both of them readily jumped into the car, feeling very satisfied with the high altitude experience.

Incidentally, I had come to know that Mark had run up Khardung La, (which is higher than T. La, and is the world's highest motorable pass).

A super record and a thud

It was a fine morning. The monsoons haven't arrived yet. The morning breeze is filled with chilled air and that dose of adrenaline, which is only unique to Bangalore.
Otherwise, where would we find the motivation for a lazy person like me to wake up before five in the morning and complete a sixty km ride, and yet present yourself spic and span at nine.
This day was just normal like ant other day, with office work running till midnight the previous day. I got out of my home at 0530 for the Varthur circle, which marked the start point for Attibele loop, which is fast becoming my favourite. its not only the butter smooth roads, but also the rolling terrain and the green surroundings. All of the above makes a perfect combination to replace a cup of coffee, and packed enough caffeine to kick-start your day.
The loop measures 53 km, and with my commute it totaled sixty, making it an ideal two and a half hour workout on a weekday. The first time I attempted the course, I did it in 2:13. Two attempts later, I could bring the time down to 2:09.
So, todays was a much looked forward to ride, not only because of the scenery, but also because I was expecting a better timing, after the installation of toe clips.
The ground was still wet from the mild drizzle the previous night. I set my Garmin to virtual partner mode for the pre-marked course, started it, and pushed off. the traffic as usual was less. After about the kilometres, I was feeling a slight pain on the left knee. I slowed down a little before pacing further. The pain must be because of the insufficient warm up.
I just kept looking at the Garmin and paced further. All of a sudden, I realized that the Farming was a stopped. I set it right and moved along. Based on the gap in the distance, I must have had it speed for about five-six minutes, you never know.
As I continued looking at the virtual partner and paced myself, I noticed another thing. The distance remaining was never getting updated and it remained at the same eve since the start of the course. To add to that, the virtual partner also went into recalculation, and I was never sure from this point, whether I was faster than my previous time or not. I had no option to keep pushing through the ride.
On the back of my mind, I was still calculating how to get the missed time.
Except for the small bad patch after Attibele, all the ride was done pushing myself.
And finally when I arrived at Cathie circle, I stopped the watch, and reset it to save the workout. As it showed the details, I immediately knew, I beat the previous time, but not by how much.
I went over the workout details, and was in for a pleasant surprise. I beat previous time by over six minutes. I was only expecting to better it by a coupe of minutes.
With confidence brimming, I started pedalling slowly towards home. usually, the ride back home was usually the toughest, but today was different. I was happily pedalling.
As I reached Thubarahalli, I  needed to make a right turn, I WA already in the middle of the road, and it was easy. Somebody was honking very badly, and I let him pass. For all that hungama created, It was a motorcycle.
I checked again that there is nobody in the right lane and moved towards the right to make a turn. There was again another round of honking  which must have gone for two seconds. The next thing I knew was that I was lying on the road, and a cabbie had hit me from behind.
I was having an excruciating pain on my left wrist, and a few scrapes on my left elbow and leg.
With all the pain, I lifted myself up and also tried to move the bike. The rear wheel was jammed and the chain had come off from the front chain-rings.
Some passers-by were just looking, confused or otherwise wondering why people ride bicycles. Two good samaritans came to me rescue: while one offered a ride, the other offered to safe keep the bike, when I get treatment in a hospital.
I assured them I was perfectly airtight and tried to walk. aS stiffen flash of dizziness, caught me and I fainted. I waited fir another minute sipping water politely declining any help offered and carried along, carrying the bike. the first samaritan managed to catch me on his car, and gave me a ride. I has to get off the car at a fair distance from my home, just to ensure that me family doesn't get overly worried.
After reaching home my first priority was to send off Chandu to office without creating an alarm. the next task was to go to a hospital, and get an x-ray.
The orthopaedic didn't consult in the mornings, and being already at the hospital, I did not wasn't to waste time, and had to settle for a consultation with the general physician. I specifically asked the front desk if the physio will be able too take a look at the fracture, and the answer was kind if evasive. I wad  happy after the consultation. The doc simply mentioned that the wrist is write well protected and you quote him, "nothing usually happens around that area".
I was happier when I went back home. A few hours later, when the pain started increasing, I decided to consult the ortho. The ortho was quote clear, and immediately suggested a x-ray and the rest of the formalities followed. I walled out if the hospital with my wrist in cast. It turned out that I had a fracture in the scaphoid, and such fractures are quite common.Why the general physician could not figure it out its entirely a different story, and that is the state of our medical system. they could have simply asked me to consult the ortho than wasting time with an useless consultation.
the fracture would take five to six Weeks to heal, and more importantly, I cannot do any exercise during this period.

The first days in Leh

After a long night of ordeal, I finally arrived in Leh, yesterday morning. I am in Leh for La Ultra (www.thehigh.in), as part of a support crew member for one  of the runners. This is the most looked forward to "event" all this year, ahead of even my cycling and running event. So, what about the ordeal at the Delhi Airport. I had a ovenight transfer with some business to be taken care of, which meant, that I could not settle into a coze little hotel room for sleep. Moreover, the transit time was too less for me to attempt such a thing. The T3 terminal is truly world-class, kudos to GMR, it matched up to the best international airports, I have seen, including Dubai and Singaport.

So what about the ordeal. It meant that I had to spend a sleepless night in the visitors lounge at the terminal, keeping an eye on my luggage. To add to that, my early morning flight was postponed by an hour-and-a-half, which added to the wait time. And to add insult to the injury, I learned that there was another flight, which went on time, and I could have made to it, had the airline staff informed about it. So, to sum it up, a long sleepless night at the airport.

The commute from Leh airport to my assigned hotel was very smooth, with the confusions handled between the taxi driver and the event organizing staff. After having breakfast in the flight already, I wasn't  interested in breakfast either.

Having traveled an altitude of close to 3000 metres above from Bangalore, all it meant was that I had to rest all day. I am not a guy who catches sleep so easily during daytime. So, I had to resort to a book from the hotel's library. "A call of the man-eater" by Kenneth Anderson proved the right company for me during the next few hours, till I could get a little drowsy. I was always fond of colonial time Indian stories about the Indian country side, and this book was no exception. The author had an amazing touch to the descriptions of pre-independence India, some of which still remains. A good takeaway for me is that I can visit in person, some of the places described in the book.

The hotel was located just outside the city, with lots of greenery around. With lots of birds chirping around, and the view from the window covering might snowcaps, which still are snow-covered in this hot July summer, I am sure the rest of the days are going to be both exciting and refreshing.

The book, in all, talks about the hunting expeditions of the author, in which he goes after man-eaters. (Big cats which have resorted to killing humans).

The evening had a briefing meeting, where I got to my runner, Mark Wolley, who'll be attempting a distance of 222 kilometres a week from now. For mortal runners like us, running 22 km is quite a challenge. And Mark will be attempting 222 km. Distance is the last challenge in his attempt here. He is going to cross two different mountain passes both around 18000 ft, and also cover close to 30000 ft in altitude gain. The temperature in the Leh can go from a bone freezing -5 degrees in the cold of night, to a max of 40 degrees during the peak of the day.
Truly, this is a challenge reserved only for the elitest of the elite runners.

To support him for a continuous period of 60 hours, is an easy task, considering the runner he is. He is not going to present much of a challenge. Our challenge will be in keeping ourselves sane throughout those sixty hours.

I got to understand Mark's vital running habits during our hour long discussion, including, what types of food he would prefer, how he would like to run the course, and how we manage his fatigue levels. The list doesn't here. But in the end, Mark summed it up all in one sentence. "You will have to go by how I feel at the moment, at any point in the race".

This was best left to experience, than to planning. While we still have to do our fair bit of planning, we'll have communicate constantly with Mark and understand him more during the course of the race to help him complete this mammoth challenge.

The dinner back at the hotel was quite ordinary, with me getting finicky about what I eat. I did skip rice which I had been avoid for dinners during the last few months.

The next day...
There was a planned (small) marathon around Leh for all the organizers and crew members today. This was to give a high altitude running experience to whole team, and not just the elite runners.

The race started at 6:15 am, with a majority of runners taking part in the 21km half-marathon category. Interestingly, the HM participants outnumbered 10K participants by three times. Having arrived only a day early, and with limited training, I had to miss the race. Acclimitization was the prime reason. I was deeply disappointed that I could not run in such wonderfull surroundings.

Being forced to sit on the sidelines, I took responsibility of the Finishing line, along with Sakshi, another runner from Delhi. We saw through the 10K participants, the Half-marathon participants, and finally the marathon participants too. I couldn't control my urge to run, and ended up running and walking along with the last of the marathon participants for the last two kilometres.

Remarkably, Mark Collley, who I am crewing, came first in the Half-marathon, and the marathon finish was even better, with the lead runner sprinting up the hill for a complete two kilometres, which was the last of his 42km run. Everybody was just amazed at how much this runner had in store.

Being late from the race, I took a quick shower, and took a quick lunch at El Forno restaurant, the pre-determine rendezvous location for our team, which included Romila Sil, the scuba-diving instructor. The rest of the afternoon was spent shopping, first for the run along with Mark, and then for me, to carry something back home. We picked upon some fresh juicy apricots, and we liked it to the extent that we went back and got an extra serving.

With another briefing in the evening, I could just find enough time to write this blog. There may be something more coming, so stay tuned.

Two falls and a Flat later...

Huliyurdurga was the route we had done a practice ride about four weeks back, which meant that part of the course was familiar. It was also the course for the 200km brevet, by IISc Randonneurs.

Brevets or Randonnees are self-supported rides, in which a rider has to complete the set course in given time. A rider will also have to arrive at the pre-defined control points in time, failing which, the overall ride will be disqualified, even if he/she arrives at the finish line in time. 

The time target is usually set around a pace of 15kph. Dont let the 15 number fool you, as we ride normally faster than 15. The catch is that overall average should be set at 15, and this will include all the breaks taken, which means that the average required is more than 15, and is around the 20 number. 

Huliyurdurga was a tight-course with three controls. This meant that you cannot afford to ride fast and take a longish break somewhere.

Preparations...
Thanks to my experience with the 1000K and 600K brevet attempts, I was prepared mentally. In terms of the equipment, all that was required to take the bicycle for servicing, which I had given it to RR cycles, for want of time. Otherwise, the carb-rich dinner for two nights before the brevet day, ensured that I will not bonk during the day.

The plan was to take the handle-bar bag, but the rain jacket spilled over to a backpack. After a conversation with Dileep, I ensured that the rain jacket also got in to the handle-bar bag, and I wouldn't have to carry a backpack. I had a trail-mix which took the centre of the bag, and around it went 8 to 10 packs of Gatorade. Underneath was some first-aid material. All this was packed strategically so that, one, the Gatorade packs can be pulled out easily, and two, dipping into the trail mix need only opening the handle-bar bag. This ensured that I dont have to stop and lose time during the ride.

Inquiries about parking at the start-point didn't yield much positive response. I was mentally prepared for a 1-hour ride to the start-point with the wake-up alarm set at 0300. With that set, I went to bed the previous night at 2100, which is very unusual. I still recollect Ananya and Chandu (my daughter and wife) coming to sleep at around 2230. Ananya was running all around, and did manage to wake me up, but by then, I had already got sound sleep worth half-the-night. After 0200 I kept waking up and checking the clock, and finally decided to get out of the bed by 0310.

The ride
With about 80 registrations, I didnt want to take any chances with the last minute rush at the start-point. The one-hour ride was a breeze and got me warmed up nicely. Sreepathi was at the start handing out the brevet cards. And one more IISc volunteer making the mandatory checks. Some known faces, including Karthik, Kiran, Suma (we'll cover about her later) and a few other known faces. The starting lineup also included Nirmal from IISc.

The initial directions reaching to Magadi from IISc was tricky, and I decided to stick with Aashutosh who knew the way. This ensured that the planned 30minutes for the first 7K stretch to Magadi Road was covered in about twenty minutes.

Reaching Magadi Road, there was a steep uphill, which all of us were struggling to cover. A couple of roadies were ahead, and I managed to pass each one of them. The leader, Som appeared to be peadling slowly and waiting for others. As I passed him, asked him about the same. Both of us paced ahead knowing that others will catch up later on.

A few minutes later, I asked Som, if he could join a paceline. He agreed, and we managed to convince Aashutosh, who was on a MTB. For the next twenty minutes, we rode fast with each of us taking the lead for one minute each. With a heavier MTB, Aashutosh was getting tired, and he asked us to carry along. And so, it was just me and Som, and we did great, alternating when the other's pace slowed. Som's bike computer wasn't working and he kept asking along, "How far to the control", and we faced nice rolling hills before Magadi.

The first control was set just outside Magadi fort at a small breakfast place serving Thatte idli, and the volunteers managed to signal us down as we just passed. We were pleased to know that we were the first to arrive at the control, and that boosted our confidence. There is no better breakfast than Thatte idli. Takes about two hours to comeback as energy, and very hygienic. 

I double-checked with Som, and ordered for both of us, while the control formalities were getting taken care of. The idli was about the size of a 10-inch plate, and I managed to finish 70% of it and fed the rest to a dog standing nearby. We also managed to get our bottles filled so that we dont have to make a mandatory stop later on. The big advantage with remote rural areas is that the drinking water is both hygienic (free from industrial pollution), and mineral-rich too! We kept filling along the route wherever it felt hygienic.

As we were completing the formalities, the rest of the riders were arriving and getting their control formalities done. We pushed off, trying to keep the lead, which'll give us a good psychological advantage. As Som was having only one sipper, I asked him to get another waterbottle and keep it in his backpack. This was necessary, as we were approaching the hotter part of the day. We tried doing the paceline again with Ashok, another rider, but he wasn't able to catch the tail. We moved along.

As the day got hotter, we were slowing down. After a couple of stops, I pulled out my magical trail mix, and it did seem to work. Both of us were cruising along. There was a group of building to the right, what appeared to be a ITI, with some teens playing in the huge playground. I always envy these guys, bestowed with such big playgrounds. 

Just we were were cruising along, I heard, "Oh.. Oh.. Oh..", and the loud noise of a crash. Som, was tailing me, and just for a moment, he lost concentration, and when he turned back, he couldn't judge the distance, and braked hard. With his front brake applied hard, he toppled. Ashok was following us close, and he stopped and offered help. We quickly got some Neosporin and band-aids from my first aid kit. Thankfully, the first aid kit has been put to use. I kept telling Som, "Use all you want. These things arent of so much use after I get back".  

We allowed Som to rest for a while. As we were resting, we saw a few groups pass by. I kept reassuring Som that we'll be catching up and not to worry. This group included a big peloton of about 15 riders, with Nirmal curising on his Bianchi Camelonte. In this meantime, we got Som's bike checked, and fixed his seat, which got off the rails. 

With most of the group ahead of us, we started on a low note. Just as we were starting, it appeared 
as if my brakes were brushing against the well. I had to stop, and called out another roadie, Sreekanth for help. After a quick adjustment, all three of us started off. Sreekanth agreed to ride on the paceline. The next hour saw the three of us, riding on a paceline, with each one of us taking the lead. Som was less confident following and he would take the lead most the time, and would keep a longer distance, if he were to follow. We kept passing most of the riders who had crossed us when were riding, but the mystery remained, who all were ahead of us.

When we reached Huliyurdurga, a few riders were already waiting. We just stopped for sufficient time, just to get our water bottles filled. As we pushed along, we had to stop at a few places, thanks to the cue-sheet, which had some minor issues. At this time, we were a big gang of ten people. Most important was the the turn on to the mudroad, which was literally at a 'nowhere' point. After checking with villagers, we proceeded. The next five kilometres was semi-paved road, which I rolled gently off-the-saddle. The complete stretch of bad roads, was a total of 13km, half of which was damaged roads, which could be managed. But the unpaved stretch was a back-breaker. All of us were relieved when the stretch ended, and the much looked-forward to Sugar Factory arrived.

When the group is bigger, the stops only increase, and when get bigger every time you stop. Stick to smaller groups and resist the urge to stop. And yes, every minute counts.

The three of us roadies stuck together, the paceline not necessarily in formation. This was also the hotter part of the day, so we had to ride it out with patience. And when we saw the Railway overcrossing, there was a huge sigh of relief, and energy flowed out of nowhere, that we rolled on the bridge at 30kph.

The next control Maddur Tiffanys was not very far. As we arrived there, we saw Nirmal and Karthik, already seated at a table. They must have been five minutes ahead of us. Som wasn't inclined to take lunch. But Sreekanth, was intended on going for a double-lunch. He ordered an extra Masala Dosa. I gave clear instructions to the cashier so that each one of us would get a time-slip. As we finished out luch, the buttermilk was tasting heavenly. Such that I ordered two extra (paid) servings, and Sreekanth got one. 

With the energy flowing from the lunch, we three, cruised along a fast pace. Paceline riding always means that you get a boost of an extra few kph. As we were crusing, I felt something on my rear wheel, and then "Oooh...ahh..Oooh...ah", and I stopped to see, Sreekanth lying on the road. Quite lucky, that there wasn't any heavy vehicle following him. It turned out that he was riding close to me, and couldn't accomodate my swerve to avoid the pothole on the road.

We took the opportunity to rest, and enjoy the ambience. This happened right on a bridge, and whenever something crossed, even a small tractor, the whole bridge would vibrate. We were rattled when a few lorries passed. The most interesting fact about this stop was that, whatever we did, each of our bikes fell when they were completely stopped. Must be the winds on the bridge, or some bad omen, as Sreekanth and Som were quite fixated about my back wheel.

When we started, we decided to ride the next 15km out separately. The few minutes gained out of the paceline wasn't worth the risk. Also during this stop, we saw most of the riders pass us. We quickly reached Ramanagara, and took the road to Magadi, after a few inquiries with the locals. When I saw a water tap by the roadside, I ensured that I filled up my water bottles. Not that I needed the water, but both my bottles had extra Gatorade that the water was tasting sweet. So sweet, that I had to dilute them. Such a stop in the middle of the day under the high sun, only encourages you to take more rest. All of us took the opportunity to rest. I lied flat on the ground, even though I didn't get flat ground to do so.

As we were resting, Sreekanth commented "Lady, Lady...". And we saw Suma, the lone female rider in the whole group pass us. I replied, "Guys, we cannot afford to let a woman pass us. Even if she happens to be a Iron woman". Suma, is a half-Ironman finisher, having finished the half Ironman Triathlon. The event included, 2km of swimming, 90km of biking and 21km of running. We managed to gather ourselves and get started.

After taking the right turn to Manchanabele dam, the road wove through beautiful villages, and trees dotted the roads, giving us shade. The last couple of kilometers before Manchanabele Dam, had an excruciating climb, which I managed to cross with a lone stop. The stop was made to help out Sreekanth, who had a problem with his drivetrain. And finally when the climb ended, Som wanted to stop. I egged him on to continue the next 10 kilometres till the control. We kept looking for the control, painfully.

And when the control finally arrived, Sreepathi was greeting us. We got our cards stamped, and when we mentioned to him about the climb, he replied, "Oh, it was just 6% and it a very short climb". Eight riders were already ahead of us, and we moved on quickly to catch them if we can.

At Magadi Road
After a few stops and inquiries, we managed to get to Magadi Road, all through some very beautiful country terrain. And when we reached Magadi Road, we were looking forward to the climbs to get back to the starting poing. Magadi Road was full of rolling terrain, which we were managed quite well. The traffic was chaotic and difficult to manage.

All three of us stuck together, and as we reached the ORR junction, I realized my front tire had a flat. I couldn't stop in the middle of traffic, and hence had to ride a few more metres to stop safely. I signalled to Som and Sreekanth to stop. At this time, we would have reached the finish by 1800 if not for the flat. Both of them were in no hurry and were happy to help. 
 
We quickly removed the tube. However, the tire didn't seem to have anything.  I ran a couple of checks, and then Sreekanth did. We didn't want to risk another puncture. After a few minutes, we decided to get the new tube in. I got one of the stock Btwin tubes. The quick check for pinches revealed that a small part of the tube was still stuck between the tyre and the wheel. We did all sorts of magic tricks to get it in. However, the tube refused to go in. And finally, when it went in, we must have lost close to half-an-hour.

We quickly moved on, wading through the traffic in Outer Ring Road. Traffic was heavy, and the lights tested our patience. We managed to cross one of them by pushing the bikes. Earlier instructions from Sreepathi meant that we had to avoid Iskcon junction. We rode all the way to Tumkur Road, and rode through the traffic. I kept asking Som, if we are on the right path.

When we reached the Yeshwantpur flyover, all of us were off-the-saddle and pushing to our limits. As we got down from the bridge, there was another huge pileup of traffic, which we had to wade through. We took the turn onto MS Ramiah Road, it was less than 100 metres to the finish. Two guys were waiting at the gates, who signed off on our brevet cards. We quickly paid for the medals, went to the wash rooms, refreshed ourselves and got some water to drink.

And when we came back, we congratulated the rest of the riders, bid farewell, and left to do our chores.

There is a reason why Randonnees or brevets are not organized as races. Once you bring in the "race" word, it brings in a sense of competition, and everybody is focussed more on their performance than the actual ride. In more than one occasion on this ride, riders including me, stopped to help fellow riders who got stuck. That would be nigh impossible, if the brevet was organized like a race. 

For me, it was an enriching experience, meeting new people and riding with a common goal. At the end of the day, I did finish in time, and thats what counts!

470 kms and two unfinished brevets later...

470+ kms and two unfinished brevets later.... Unfinished, well, let us take a look at that.

It was all set to start at 4pm on a pleasant Thursday evening. Myself, Deepak started for the startpoint, which was CCD in Prestige Meridian, MG Road. As usual, we started late, and was rushing through the rush hour traffic. When we reached there, the other riders were just arriving. We had just sufficient time to socialize and introduce ourselves. Just as we were getting socialized, I looked at the clock, and it was already reading 1630. So, I rushed to start along with the other riders, Chiddu and Sohan, with some of the Cleated Warriors (CW) following us. Starting at this time, also means, that you have to wade through the rush hour traffic to get out of the city.

Ever since I took to cycling, brevets have been a distant goal. So, what made me chose the 1000K ahead of others....

While the planning had started quite a while back, I had been ordering (not exactly) cheap accesories through my favourite online shopping site dealextreme. Online shopping has its own disadvantages. One, the quality, which so far I haven't found a big issue so far. And the other, delivery time. The shipping from China meant that you'll have to order atleast three weeks in advance, and even if you do, there isn't a guarantee, that it'll be delivered on time. Having said, it is obvious that our brevet shopping spilled on to the day of the brevet too, with some last minute shopping at Decathlon. Thanks to all the expertise, that Deepak had gathered from his fellow teammates, we were decently equipped, for a 200K brevet ride, if not for a 1000K brevet.

And so, why 1000K. Well, you see I dont believe in setting lean targets. The goals have to be stiff to keep me inspired. My travel plans for the La Ultra (www.thehigh.in), meant that I'll miss the 600K brevet in July, which also meant that I had to accomodate it in July. The upgrade from 600K to 1000K happended because I am fairly new to cycling, and wanted to do it with known company. Deepak being part of the 1000K, was just another excuse to join the 1000K.

The most important reflective jacket hadn't arrived till the last day, which meant that we had to buy a cheapo alternative from JC road. Also, the bike computer arrived one day earlier than the brevet, so, it had not been tested at all.

To talk about how equipped I was, I had an uncalibrated and untested bike computer. I had decent headlights, with a reasonable mount, which I happened to break the night before. I did a DIY solution with a zip tie to fix the broken mount, which worked fairly well. In fact, all the original functionality was restored except that the mount rotated around the handlebar. On the shorter rides, I hadn't found it to be a problem.

To talk about my physical preparation, my recent biking exploits and the marathon training schedule ensured that I woke up at 4am everyday, with an average of five hours sleep per day. On some days, I would sleep for barely three hours. Remember, I was logging three workouts on dailymile a couple weeks back, including the commute.

Our preparation also included detailed conference calls with Deepak and Sohan (a very experienced randonneur), on what to eat, where to sleep, how to ride and all that. The conference call put our business calls to shame.

And so, we started at 1630, and had to wade through the crazy traffic all along till we reached Yeshwantpur junction. Somewhere along the line, my bike computer stopped working. I had tagged all along with Sohan, and I was about 20 metres behind him, when we reached the expressway flyover. He zoomed ahead on the bridge, and i had no way of communicating with him, so, I followed him. The winds on the flyover was the hardest that I had seen in all my four months of cycling. I also saw Chiddu zoom past as if there is no tomorrow.

Somewhere along here, it rained hard, and we decided to continue out on the rain, of course, with the jacket on. Within twenty minutes, we were completed drenched. My socks were wet giving an uncomfortable feeling inside the shoes.

We had no option to continue, and we stopped to clean our bikes at a roadside bakery. My bike computer had to wait till now, and it turned out that the magnetic sensor had turned inward. No idea, how it could have happened. The rain had taken its toll, and the bike computer had gone out of function. From this point, I had no idea, how much I had covered, or what speed I was riding.

Just as we started, we saw the CW gang zoom by. We quickly exchanged some tips, and started riding in a paceline. My newly installed toe-clips meant that I started a bit behind, and that status remained through the rest of the ride. 

About fifteen minutes later, I saw Sohan and Gana stopped on the side, and it was flat for Sohan. Gana was helping him, and I also stopped trying to help Sohan. The CW gang who had already zoomed by, were waiting for us about three or four minutes ahead of us. It was only when we reached there, we realized Deepak was desparately trying to reach us. He must have given some ten missed calls. The gang decided that we'll stick together till the rest of the ride. 

From then, it was a paceline formation, with Opendro taking the lead, and myself contributing a bit now and then. Deepak also pitched in when there were heavy winds. With no experience of paceline riding, I found it a bit harder to handle, and was calling easy easy all the time.

A few more stops later, we were still looking for the elusive dinner place, and finally decided, "Ok, let us have dinner here". All of us are tired.

After dinner, it must be some magical energy, the paceline was moving smoothly, with tailwinds also contributing to it. "All in", would be the call from the lead, and Gana doing the sweeping duties would relay it back if there wasn't any gaps.
I was struggling to keep up in the paceline. So, I would attack off the saddle, go ahead, and then come back and join the paceline.

At some point, the backpack on my shoulder was causing me a stiff shoulder, and I told the group that I had to lie down and stretch for five minutes. By this time, some of the riders had already gone ahead. But Opendro, Deepak and gang decided to stick together with me.

When we started, my toe-clips again ruined my start, and I was 100 metres behind to start with. I tried my best in keeping up, but could never close in on the paceline. After one stretch of construction, where we took the service road, and joined back, i lost sight of the paceline.

From here, for the next few hours, I was riding alone. It was a scary experience, with my lights going on an off. My estimate of 10 hours for a fully charged battery went for a toss, with the batteries lasting only 3-4 hours max. And these batteries weren't even fully charged.

When I reached the next toll gate, I was relieved to see Deepak, Opendro, and Kiran waiting for me. Opendro took off as he would miss the control otherwise. By this time, Kiran wanted to turn back. Both Deepak and Kiran talked me into returning. At first, I wanted to reach atleast the first control. Both of them mentioned that I had been pushing and wont be able to continue past the first control, and even if I do, wont make it to the next control in time.

I was in a spot: I had no experience of traveling with bike. I could either join Kiran, who was returning anyway, or continue riding alone for another hour and a half, to the next control, which looked stiff. Just at this moment, one more wave of drowsiness set in, and the decision was clear. I cannot brave sleep atleast immediately. With half an hour nap, I will miss the control. 

Kiran and I were trying to find out if we could get a ride to Bangalore. Fifteen minutes in the biting cold, and a few buses later, we got a private Volvo sleeper. We put the bikes in the bottom compartment, and the sleeper also meant that we could stretch. I only remember covering myself with the blanket. The next thing that I know was the cleaner asking us to get down at Navrang. For some reason, he let us continue till Anand Rao circle, and we pedaled our way back home.

So, how do I start the 600K
Just as I was getting down from the bus, I told Kiran, "I shouldn't have returned last night. And guess what, I am registered for the 600K".

The ride back home was spent planning what needs to be mended if I were to start the 600K.

The laundry list included, getting the bike computer laminated to make it water-proof, getting the bike lubricated, shopping for medicines, getting batteries fully charged, etc.

In the evening, I wanted to have a good protein based dinner. Going out to a restaurant was ruled out, as Chandu was held up at work. It was time to try out something new, and I got Indian Salmon fillet from Hypercity, which was marinated in my trademark gravy, and steamed. I never knew that cooking fish was going to be so easy. I can fill in my protein requirements with ease now on.

After unpacking my backpack, and handlebar bag, I set out to preparing to pack. The Gatorade packs were neatly arranged, so that they can be pulled out at anytime if I wanted. In went all types of nuts and dry fruits in separate packs (which I realized was a mistaked later on. All I needed is a trail mix with one pack).

When the packing finished, it was 2230. I lubricated the bike with the wetlube bought at Decathlon earlier in the day. When I went to bed, it was close to 2330. I was just hoping to catch up a couple of hours sleep, but was awake till almost 0100.

The alarms were set at 0200, which when promptly rang, I still needed another 10 minutes to get out of bed. It was almost 0240 when I left home. 

It was a hushy-pushy till CCD, MG Road, where I reached by 0330. Sreepathi and another organizer. They patiently answered all my questions, and were gracious enough to give me the directions, and also the phone numbers for all the riders who had already started on time. When I pushed off, it was 0340.

Outer Ring Road, was a pleasure to ride on, being fully illuminated. I was still getting a creaking noise from the drive train, and so, I had to stop and lubricate it. Besides, I had to stop to appease a stray dog chasing me. And I did make a couple of stops, once to check the Brevet card, and another time to check the bike computer calibration. (Later in the day, I would realize that all these stops proved costly).

From the previous experience, I avoid the elevated expressway, and was comfortable riding on the service roads. Seriously, there wasn't any traffic at 0430 in the morning, and it made sense not to take the winds on the elevated express way. 
The next stop was the toll gate after Nelamangala, and I stopped to take water. I also muched on a juicy Mysore Pak. The sugars didn't matter, as they would get used up anyway. "Its all downhill to Tumkur", the comment from a lorry driver motivated me to cruise all along till Tumkur. 

By this time, I had established contact with a fellow rider, who was ahead of me by one hour. No matter what I did, I could average only 17 or 18, leaving me little room for improvement. Remember, I had lost 40 minutes at the start.

Just a little before Sira, I felt the bike was sluggish. I stopped to check the tire, and found that the rear tire had a flat. The sun was beating down at 1030. Luckily, it was just by the side of a small orchard, and I quickly moved the bike to the shade of a tree and set out to repair the flat. A small glass piece has found its way through the tire, to cause a puncture. The cut was a little wide, and hence I had to patch it. With nothing available, I used the the sandpaper that came with the puncture kit.

Putting back the tire was a big struggle. This is the first time, the tire had been taken off. I took a breath, took a quick shot of Gatorade, and with all the energy boost, managed to get the tire back in. I must have lost somewhere around 30-40 minutes for the puncture. This also meant that I had to average 16 for the next 60-odd kms to make it to the control with half-an-hour to spare.

The next few hours went like a struggle against the clock, with two water stops. For one, I had to walk about 50 metres into a compound, and the Dhaba staff took all their time to give me a water bottle. Luckily, the next one was a free one, at a small house, by the roadside. They were not selling water bottles, and hence it was their own well water filled with all essential minerals. I took the opportunity to get another gulp more.

When I reached Hiriyur control, I had about 40 minutes to spare. I made a few enquiries to get to the ATM. And you know the store with State Bank Atms. Half the time, they aren't working, and when they are working there are atleast half-a-dozen people waiting outside.

When I reached the Atm, a group of three were already trying to figure out if the machine worked or not. And that only meant more crowd gathering. I was lucky to get a spare ATM slip from one of the users, but wasn't sure if I could use it. (It was from a different card). With some struggle, I explained the staff, that i need only a slip, and managed to get it. The ATM didnt have cash anyway. All this cost a crucial fifteen minutes. 

When I came out of the Atm, the sky opened and a light drizzle started. I used the opportunity to get into a hotel, and get some Anna Sambar. Also got some Chikki and filled my water bottles with tender coconut water. I wanted to get a photocopy of the Cue card, but as luck turned out, there wasnt any power. 

Quickly enquired for the directions and got out on the highway, and when I hit the next toll booth, I looked up the cue sheets. The next control was at 2356, which meant that a nap closer to the control would be costly.

There was an ambulance shed at the next toll plaza. "Illi malko bohudha', (Can I lie down here), was met with a "No problem" from the ambulance driver. I lied down for about ten minutes, and dozed off. It must have been half-an-hour. It did not matter for me, as I still had nine hours to catch up to the control. 

Just half-an-hour before this, Karthik, the fellow rider confirmed that he was an hour ahead. I could have caught him (atleast hoped), if I had not rested. But considering the one hour sleep last night, I needed a break, which would help me continue on the ride.

Outside of Chitradurga, there was a steep uphill, and stiff head winds. No wonder, they have placed the windmills correctly here. My riding speed halved to almost 11-12kph. Just then, I stopped and had a mouthful of Figs and raisins. 

Not sure where the energy came from, the next half-hour I saw myself riding at blazing speeds, without minding about the winds. This gave me a big confidence boost. As I entered Chitradurga, i checked the cue-sheets, and was trying to find directions. The directions included going through a no-entry. The policeman at the junction also pointed out the same way.

Just as i reached the highway to Davangere, I stopped to fill up my water bottles, and get an extra dose of raisins, which could be my magic fuel.

The scenery on Chitradurga-Davangere Road, was beautiful, with rolling hills, and fields on either side. I was maintaining a constant speed of 25-26kph. However, my aggressive riding position meant that i had to stop once in a while. The average per hour was close to 19, while the required average was 18.

I saw the sun set beautifully, as I pushed along the rolling hills. I turned the headlights and tail lights and continued cruising.

There was a note in the cue sheet suggesting speed breakers. I kept looking for those, and they never seemed to appear. I must have crossed 2 or 3 km from the distanced indicated in the cue sheet. So, I moved along.

Some thoughts about my family came along, and it felt why I was doing this crazy ride. Quickly I got out of that mode, and was thinking, what all games the ride can play on your mind.

SCreeech! I just saw a traffic barricade on my way, at about 10 metres. I stopped abruptly. I was safe, and more importantly, the bike was safe. There were a group of villagers standing nearby. I stopped for a while wondering what happened, chatting to the villagers.

They provided more courage to continue. I got onto the saddle and continued. Soon, I started feeling the pain in the shoulders, and the wrist, and the ....

I was already in a different state, and didnt feel it was safe to continue further. I stopped at the next roadside Dhaba, trying to get a hitch to Davangere. I called Deepak and Sohan telling them I am pulling out. Then I called home, telling that I am coming back.

It was a struggle to find a hitch, and finally, one truck driver agreed to give me a ride till Davangere bypass. I was dozing heavily on the truck for the 20-odd minutes that I was inside. If not, I would have caught the 1000K guys riding in the opposite direction.

After I got down at the bypass,  I had to ride about 3km inside. And believe me, that was the toughest 3K I would have done so far in my entire life. Bad roads through the villages, pot holes, and at that time, every building appeared like a bus stand.

Finally, when I reached the bus stand, there was Rajahamsa to Bangalore bus exiting. At first, I was concerned about the bike. The conductor gave me a seat, and put the bike in the rear luggage carrier. My bike got an exclusive ride in the luggage carrier. 

I didnt even want to ride from Majestic, so caught a Volvo, and this time, the bike getting a free ride.

Do I regret starting the 1000K or the 600K...?
Absolutely not. I might have been a little overconfident or got carried away with the average speed of 15, but you dont understand all that by reading message forums. 

I do regret pulling out, but at that time, that was the best decision to make. I might have made it to Ranebennur control, with time to spare. But to ride through the night for another ten hours, was just too risky. 

Will I come back for a brevet?
Why not... But will come better equipped, and ensure that I'll be in a group when the sun is down.

When I told Sohan that I will be attempting the 600K. He suggested that I take the shorter ones, 200 or 300 or 400.

When you set your goals, you need to aim high! To know that you can do 200K or 300K and attempt that would be short of a challenge.

When you see a uphill, you are happy. And when you see a downhill, you are happier.

I had only one goal in mind. I wanted to do my set workout of twenty miles. The hilly terrain goal was already taken care of the location.Speed or timing was secondary.

We were stating at the Taj Gateway, and I had asked for route suggestions with the receptionist. More than one person knew that I was crazy to be running 30 km.

Luckily the night duty receptionist, Dushyanth, was knowledgeable about the area and suggested me a route. He even offered half a dozen yelaki bananas. Wah Taj, they treated us royally. Of course, what else to expect after you have taken the best room available, and have arrived early and got acquainted with half the staff. The F&B manager was more than happy to give a flask of milk to start with. All complementary.

The morning start was planned at 0500. And I went to bed at 2300. I barely could sleep because of the new environment. At 0430, I decided to spring out of bed and get ready. I had to get a few last minute items ironed out.

At 0505, I went to the main gate to find out that it was closed, and the security guard wasn't around. It took some more time to get the run started. It was 0523, when I started, and Dushyanth was there to see me off.

I had four yelaki bananas, and a glass of milk before the run. The fuel along run was Gatorade, wth two sachets tucked neatly inside my running tee. I could carry only 600ml on my water bottle. I double checked that water will be available en route. As a backup, I carried some spare cash, if I were to buy water.

Add I exited the hotel, the climb down was steep, and I was only grinning what I could be covering on the way back. It was still dark when the first mile beeped, and I missed the split. I was eagerly waiting to note down the tone for the second mile, which was a cumulative 19:00. I was happy that I was getting a 9:30 average per mile. There was a fork where the road split, I decided to head straight.

Another mile I hit the first village, saggalipura. There were a pack of dogs barking at me. I slowed down a little to appease the dogs and carried on. As I reached the end of the village, the road turned into a trail. I was a little disappointed that the road had ended and carried along the trail. 


With freshly ploughed fields on one side, tall trees bordering the hills on another side, it surely looked like the Garden of Eden.

By this time, sufficient light had come up, and the scenery around the trail was excellent.Within half a mile I hit the fringes of a forest, and was cautious that wild animals could be roaming. I kept my eyes wide open just to be cautious. Another half a mile, there was a small water hole, and the trail ended. I wasn't ready to get into the forest and it could be tricky running inside the forest.

So, I turned back and headed towards the fork, where the road split. The road led me through an elevated platform, what appeared to be a tank-bund. It took me through another village, Nettakerahalli, and into a trail. But this time the trail was wider. It was a steep uphill, so I pushed along. Within another kilometre, the trail abruptly ended in what looked like a farmhouse. I checked if there was any other way, but there wasn't any. So it was time to turn back again.

I was going to head back to the hotel. After a few minutes, I realized that I had missed a turn and was heading in another direction. There was still a lot of distance to cover, and so....  After a rough patch of semi-paved road, I hit the next village Kurvangi. This time, I bypassed the village, and ran at the edge of it. Missing your turn can never be so rewarding.

And what came along was truly spectacular. At the end of the village, the road led me into a tank-bund, which wasn't paved. It was just pure earth. "Blissful", I thought and carried along. On the distant horizon, was a small temple atop the hill. I kept thinking, if I should break my run and visit the temple or not. And when it came to crossroad, I decided to carry along with my run, and cover it while returning.

When the dirt trail ended, I entered the village to the left (which I later got to know is Nettakeranahalli, the second village). This time around, there were lot of people outside their houses. The same old routine of running till the end of the village and returning continued.

About 100 metres to my turning point, I saw this steep uphill, and I was grinning. Who wants to miss an uphill when you are training for hills, anyway. So I overshot, ran up the hill and continued further. After a few minutes, I was a steep downhill, leading into a village, Chikkanahalli. And who wants to miss the return climb. The same old routine.

At this village, I saw that they were laying a railway track. On one side, I could see the track being laid, and on the other, the preparation was going on. I also filled up my water bottle at the "Jet" pump, while picking up a conversation with a few teenagers.

It was time to return, and per my calculations, I should be able to cover my target of 32K if I just make it to the hotel. So, I bid goodbye to the temple and continued.

Upon reaching the hotel, I realized that I was still two miles short of my target. I headed down Kadur road, which was heading downhill. This is the kind of a slope, that you can coast and cruise at 60kph on a cycle. I ran the downhill for one mile, and when I turned back, I said to myself, "Take fifteen minutes, but complete the climb non-stop".

I walked the first few metres, sipping the last droplets of Gatorade remaining in my bottle, and mind you, walking the climb was difficult. I gently pushed off, and shortened my stride, increasing the turnover. One step after another, I pushed along, counting myself down last 600 metres, 400 metres, 200 metres, and so. When I reached the turn for the hotel, the mile beeped 12:57.

I didn't stop there, and carried along the next 200 metres to the hotel climb, which was doubly steep, And when I reached the hotel gate, stopped and reset my Garmin. The security guard opened the gate with a smile.



When I reached my room, my family was just getting out for breakfast. I asked them to take a quick picture, headed to take a quick shower and joined them for breakfast. I finished four strawberry milkshakes, two mango smoothies, one banana smoothie, and one buttermilk from the buffet bar. All small servings, after a longish run.

To run a 20-miler is a difficult task,...
and that in the hills is daunting, and
when you top it off with a steep mile climbing 240 feet,
there is nothing more you can ask.

The hills were so mesmerizing that I returned two days later, to do a 10K tempo run, but ended up doing double the distance, covering the temple that I had missed on the first run.

When you see a uphill, you are happy. And when you see a downhill, you are happier.

The TCS 10K experience

Sometimes, its just the determination that wins! Not practice...

Carrying an injury, I deferred my training till about two weeks to go into the race. Of that I got only one week of quality training.

Despite having such limited training, I just stayed focused on my cross-training. Thanks to my recent interests in cycling, and the urge to learn swimming, I have been consistently on a work-out plan for the last two months. To the extent, that I was doing three workouts a day till about two weeks ago.

And thanks to the charity program for Diya Foundation (www.diyafoundation.com), and the need to motivate a few people at office, I just carried on my cross-training.

The longest distance that I had ran, in the recent past, was 8.3K. And the timing could be forgotten.

With such limited training, I had a clear plan. To stay at 85% of my Max heart-rate till 2km to the finish line, and push. 

The day before Race-day
This one was relaxed with a visit to some relatives, and a dinner at a restaurant. I was conscious about the dinner, and wanted to get some good carbs in for the race. By my standards, the dnner was more-than-half junk.

Before going to bed, I opened the race packet, and got my essentials ready. My race day luggaged consisted of one banana, one bottle of gatorade, racing bib (pinned to the T-shirt), and 200 bucks that went into the race shorts. The timing chip was secured to my Vibrams, which I preferred for racing, just because they are faster. The Garmin and heart-rate belt and default add-ons for every workout now.

Race Day
I woke up at 0600 hrs which was late by my standards, and got ready within half-an-hour, to meet my projected start time of 0630. When I got ready, some tardiness set in, and I had the usual last-minute nervousness, double-checking everything that I needed to carry for the race. 

I walked out of home at 0640, after a couple of calls to Deepak and Senthil. Some nervousness had already set in, as I would have barely enough time to warm up at the race venue. It was a different experience to walk with bib-pinned. I am sure everybody was looking at me on the road, but who cares!

It was a pleasant surprise to see some fellow runners when I reached the bus-stop. (Please note that none of them were wearing the bib, so, I surely was a step ahead). As bus moved on, more and more fellow runners boarded the bus, including one past colleague, whom I havent met in years.

I reached the race venue, with about 30 minutes to spare. Soon, I located the warm up area with my C-holding area marking. For all that hungama, that had been created, the runners were left to themselves to warm up. I assumed that the race was going to start from here. 

Ten minutes to the start, I realized something was wrong. There wasn't enough crowd in the warm up area. I got out of it and found the correct holding area. By this time, there was considerable build-up of crowd, and the entry points were choked. I just pushed through the crowd, and moved as close to the gate as possible. Till this time, I wasn't able to locate any of my colleagues. The only known face that I had seen was Bhasker's brother Chandramouli, and Athreya in the warm-up area.

Just as I reached the holding area, I saw the elite athletes get the gun shot and kick off their race. Within a couple of minutes, the rest of the runners were opened in three batches. To my fortune, I was in the third batch. Once again, I pushed through the crowd to get the starting point. Till this time, I was under the assumption that they were going to give us a start.

It was poor organizing that they just let us continue to run from the elite start. There wasn't any waiting near the start-line, and the customary pre-race wishing. I started my Garmin with a few metres to go for the start-line. At this time, my heart-rate was already at 90%, and my plan to stick to 85% had already gone for a toss. From this moment, I stopped bothering about the heart-rate, and kept pushing through the crowd.

The first kilometre was heavily crowded, and I had to wade through the crowd, maintaining good pace. After the first kilometer, there were sufficient gaps between the runners to weave through comfortably. 

About 150 metres to the turnaround point, I saw the first of the elite runners go forward, and then some familiar faces were there. Athreya, A2, Bhasker, etc. I cheered everybody at the turnaround. I took a walking break at the turnaround to finish my 2nd gulp of the gatorade.

As I continued to run, I recognized Vasu was ahead of me. I called out his name, and continued with him. He mentioned that we are on track for a 47-minute finish. It was great news for me, and I stuck along with him.

As we were reaching JDP circle, I was happy that we were going straight ahead to Kanteerave stadium. And the the detour towards Queens Road came. "How come we can finish a run without passing by Vidhan Soudha", I commented. Both of us were making good pace, and I was at more than 100% Max HR all the time. 

Both of us took a drinks break at the next point, and lemon gatorade I ingested didn't go well. Yet, we carried along at great pace, and entered Cubbon Park.

I had to take another water break with the water stop inside Cubbon Park, while Vasu carried along. He was about 30 metres ahead of me. I still had the chance of making it to the last km sprint with him, only that I had pushed it to the last 500 metres. 

As we exited Cubbon Park, I noticed the 9km mark, and was closing the gap and getting ready to finish. As he entered the stadium gates, I followed him fast, but lost track of him. 

Suddenly, it looked like I had lost my way, and there were people all around. I kept yelling, "Way please", and "Where is the finish line?". One volunteer indicated, that I had already finished. I spotted A2 and he indicated that the stadium entrance was the finish line.

Very much confused, I went to collect my medal and refreshments. After that, I quickly headed back to the finish line to cheer for others. I spotted a lot of familiar faces on the way back, including Bhasker, Deepak, Mani, Atreya, Damian, etc.

After about twenty minutes of cheering at the finish line, and about hundreds of high-fives to finishers, I decided to get back and catch up with the others, and got back to the finish area. Only A2 and Athreya, were around. The crowd was huge. I still hung around for another half-hour before heading back to my daughters swimming classes.

With both the start time and finish time botched up, I dont have exact finish time. However, I am sure that I had finished in less than 50 minutes, which is indeed great, considering that I had pushed myself to the core, and took three and half drinks breaks. 

About the race organization
Organizing a race with such huge number of participants is always going to be a challenge. On the other hand, the Bangalore 10K has been in running for fifth year, and Procam is professionally organizing races for about eight years (atleast as I know), and they have experience running Mumbai marathon with much larger participants.

The overall organization was great! The medal distribution, the refreshments, directions for the runners, etc.

Here are somethings that I'll definitely want to improve upon:
1. Deprivation of a proper start: I never felt like I heard the gun-shot. Though in most large races, its hardly noticed, in this case, we saw the elite runners kick off. And the others just ran from their holding areas. There wasn't a proper start. 
2. 9th Kilometer marking: I am sure the the distance from the 9Km marking to the finish line was less than half-km. This must have been the same marking used for elite runners, who had a different finish line. That makes me wonder, if the distance covered was actually 10k.
3. Finish line: Why deprive runners of a stadium finish! None of us saw the finish line with a 100 metres to spare, depriving us of the sprint to the finish!
4. Insensitive organization: As I was cheering up the finishers, one of the organizers came and told me to move away, saying that cheering from there would cause a pile up. Though he was sensitive not to say anything absurd to me, it was still a joke asking not to cheer runners up.

Overall, it was a good race for me. I felt great after the run, with my timing just in the ballpark I had expected.

Having not done major runs, it was just the determination to stick to cross-training that helped me get to the finish line in great shape!
